312 Rehearsal/Lecture Hall, 314 Music Room, Music Lobby, Narthex, Rotunda, Sanctuary

The 2024 Summer Concert of Voces Cordis, “Use Language We Can Comprehend,” will be presented at 3:00 PM on Sunday, June 30, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Denver.  This final Voces Cordis concert under the direction of their founder, Dr. Michael Pohlenz, will feature a number of his “bucket-list” favorites beginning with the concert opener, Pater Noster, a double-choir motet by Jacob Handl.  The stirring Introit and Kyrie from Maurice Duruflé’s Requiem follows, setting a serene mood for Rachmaninoff’s Bogoroditse Devo from his All-Night Vigil.   Music by Haydn, Handel and Brahms follows, in preparation for Randall Thompson’s lofty Choose Something Like a Star, from which the concert theme is taken.  Ultimately, the concert closes with Handel’s Worthy Is the Lamb, music fit to not only close history’s greatest oratorio but also to close the books on Voces Cordis.  A chamber orchestra of Denver’s finest free-lance musicians hired by union contractor Phyllis Carlson will accompany many of the selections on this final concert.  Thanks to the gracious generosity of a private donor, there will be no admission charge.

Voces Cordis – “Voices of the Heart” – is an auditioned 44-voice adult choir under the leadership of Dr. Michael Pohlenz, Music Director and Conductor, and JoAnn Gudvangen-Brown, Accompanist.  More information about Voces Cordis may be found at www.vocescordis.com, and samples of the group’s singing may be found on YouTube.
